“Villa Lobos” is a documentary on the work of the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959). His music has its sources in all three underlying Brazilian cultures : Indian, European and African. Villa-Lobos was the first composer to use the musical range of all these cultures.
Our documentary will be a initiatory musical journey, a discovery of a tremendous composer and of an unknown musical tradition.
The film will reflect the diversity of the history of Brazilian art through the vividness of its classical music. We will meet the composers and interpreters in the places where music is created and played, across three mythical cities – Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo and Recife.
From Nantes to São Paulo, from Paris to Nohant then from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo, we will be guided by conductors, musicologists, composers, intepreters who will tell us the life of this remarkable man. We will discover places Villa-Lobos lived in, visit places where his music is played and recorded and reveal the diversity, modernity and eternal presence of Heitor Villa-Lobos in Brazilian and French musical lives.
