A portraitist and intimist painter as well as an early representative of the monochromatic trend, Eugène Carrière (1849-1906) was adulated in his lifetime and totally in tune with his times.
The director, great-granddaughter of the painter, recreates the world of her ancestor, featuring for the first time paintings from private collections.
The documentary recounts the life of a man who was not only a great painter, but also a close friend of Rodin, Elie Faure, or Clémenceau.
One of the first defenders of Dreyfus, he was among those who tried to take the art out of the museums, giving lessons of History of art in popular districts of Paris.
A painter admired by the Fauves and Picasso, and respected, until the 1930’s, as much as the Impressionnists.
