This film tells the story of a tipping point.
The story of a community of long-haired artists with utopian ideals, completely unknown in the 80s and 90s, who suddenly, at the dawn of the new Millennium, found themselves thrust onto the international art stage. True, this tipping point is a logical extension of China’s economic boom. But behind the new face of this ultra-modern China, we catch a glimpse of the conquering of new territories, new cultures, new audiences and new trends; a frenetic conquest in which artists have turned into indispensable allies of the State.
Here, finally, is that prolific China, that exotic country in a frenzy of change that we so desired here in the West, thinking that it might be the genial antidote to the Americanization of the world… It is master of its own fate now. So what will it do? What will we do?
Let’s begin by looking at today’s Chinese artists and asking: who are they really? More than ever, they are themselves questioning their deepest identity and what they are to become.
What is the price to pay to preserve art’s independence?
What does it mean to be an artist in today’s China?
Or to be Chinese when you decide to be an artist?
