Jerusalem, The Challenges of Christianity

The birthplace of the Gospel, Jerusalem is now a city torn between Jews and Muslims, remaining more than ever a hub of contradictions and confrontations. It is also a plural and minority Christianity, officially composed of thirteen communities and unofficially of forty-two denominations, which embody both the tragic scandal of disunity and extraordinary cultural fertility within a perimeter of barely one square kilometer. Thus, Christian confessions vie for the Holy City while simultaneously facing the equally absolute claims of Judaism and Islam.

Amid the colorful presence of all the churches and the folklore of pilgrimages, as well as political stakes and daily struggles, the quest for origins appears inseparable from the search for a future identity that can embrace a complex past where the shadows of the Crusades and the Holocaust weigh as heavily as internal divisions.

The powerful images and diverse testimonies that make up this fourth installment thus fulfill the prospective aim of the series “The Cities of God”: what if, beyond the signs of an apparent decline, Christianity is already in the process of developing forms for a possible rebirth?
