Magritte: The Betrayal of Images

On the occasion of the major retrospective organized at the Centre Pompidou in the fall of 2016, this film delves into Magritte's work to understand how, starting from sometimes very simple symbols, the Belgian painter constructed a vast system of symbols—a pictorial language that extends far beyond the "surrealist" label often attached to him. It offers the keys to understanding one of the most popular painters of the 20th century.

“People often wonder what my painting hides. Nothing! I paint visible images that evoke something incomprehensible. I am not a symbolist… But of course, I cannot prevent people from interpreting my paintings. If they prefer to try to walk through walls rather than go through the door, what can I do about it?”
