Paul Sacher, the Music of a Century

In the early 1930s, Paul Sacher created his own orchestra and invited composers to conduct the works he commissioned from them: Bartók, Honegger, Stravinsky, and Richard Strauss all took the podium under the direction of this young pioneer of contemporary music, who dedicated his fortune and talent as a conductor to the art of his time. Paul Sacher, even today, continues his international career as a conductor while simultaneously leading the largest private patronage initiative in support of 20th-century music.

After the generation of the 50s and 60s (Boulez, Berio, Stockhausen, Dutilleux, Britten, and many others), he continues to support young composers. He has recently established an important foundation in Basel that bears his name and houses the richest collection of 20th-century musical manuscripts: the complete archives of Stravinsky, Webern, Maderna, Berio, and Boulez, as well as collections from many other musicians.

This film captures the unique testimonies of this great musical pioneer. These are illustrated with numerous documents from his foundation’s archives, film excerpts featuring Honegger or Stravinsky, orchestral rehearsals, and the testimony of Pierre Boulez. It is the first film made for television about this distinguished figure.
